What happened to GymPact? Alternatives for UK gym-goers (2026)
GymPact was one of the first apps to charge you for skipping the gym and pay those who went. It later became Pact, closed in 2017, and settled charges with the US Federal Trade Commission the same year. Several unrelated apps now use the GymPact name. Here is what happened, and what to look for in an alternative.
What happened to GymPact
- Users committed to workout or diet goals and agreed to be charged for each one they missed. People who met their goals were promised cash rewards.
- In September 2017 the FTC said Pact had charged tens of thousands of users even when they met their goals or after they cancelled, and had not paid rewards it promised.
- Pact and its founders settled. Users were due more than $940,000 in rewards and refunds as part of a $1.5 million judgment, most of which was suspended, and the company agreed not to charge anyone without their express, informed consent.
- The service had already closed. Apps on the UK App Store today with GymPact in the name are made by other developers and are not the original.
What to check in any app that charges you for missing
- 01
You can see the rules before you pay
The goal, how it is verified, what happens to the money and the fee should be on screen before you commit, not only in the terms.
- 02
Verification you can query
Trackers fail and syncs run late. Look for a published way to query a missed day, with a time limit and a reply time.
- 03
Clear cancellation
You should know how long you have to cancel for a refund, and a cancelled commitment should stop charges.
- 04
Who keeps the money
Some apps keep missed money, some share it with people who met the goal, some send it to charity. Choose the model you are comfortable with.
